Evaluation - Question 1, 2, 3,4 5 & 6

Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Part 1 -

Part 2 -

Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

There are numerous ways in which the magazine represents the particular social groups, as it is inferred through the production itself.
- Arguable the strongest factor is the front cover image, as the models clothing reflects the social group, therefore attracting the target audience.
- In addition, the idea of individuality that is presented through the photography complies with the idea that the genre breaks the rules and does not conform to mainstream.
- The contents of the magazine attracts the audience as it requires knowledge upon the genre, such as the positioning statement with ‘The Timeless Rock guide’ this suggests it is rock music from different eras, which would mean the reader has to have some level of interest in all areas of rock music.

The lin k below - cage the elepant live, echos a typical rock band and crowd thus social group.

Q3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
(Text not readable on image, bullet points below)

The company that would sell the media product I have produced would be Bauer Media due to a number of factors;
· Its produces some of the most iconic and popular music magazines in the country – such as ‘Q’, ‘Kerrang’ and ‘Mojo’. Therefore, the company knows how to market a music magazine with the greatest success
· Moreover, if it associated with such magazine as ‘Q’ it could allow itself some credibility.
· In addition, other media its owns include very popular radio stations such as; ‘Kiss’, ‘heat’ and ‘Smash hits’ which shows that is appeals to a mainstream audience and capable of gaining a large audience for the magazine.

Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

Name: Joel Murray
Age: 18
Location: Wallasey
Occupation: College, part time job.
Interests: music, football
Other;
· Attends gigs at the weekend after having researched them on the internet and in current magazines.
· Studying Music, Media and English at A level.
· Part of a band with his friends from school.

Double Page Spread Screen Shots

The Picture was improtant to the article page as it would set the tone of the article. Its positioning and scale was difficult to to do, so I followed the conevntions by having the picture a full page, as to grab the readers attention.

The title was also difficult to get right, as it had to stand out
against the picture and follow the colour scheme and tone of the rest of the media product. The text itself was hard to choose as it could not be similar to the front cover text as this would ditract from the point of having a unique font for the title. At first, I used a black, but it blended in too much against the picture, I needed it to make a statement.

Therefore, I tried it in red, as this followed the colour scheme dictated from the audience research, and stood out best against the background.
The stand first had to be short and inform the reader what the article was about as this would see if it appealed to them. Used black for the font as this contrasted to the title.
Adding the text was simple enough as the software was easy to use. However, I had to edit what I had wrote as there was too much text to fit onto the page. Also Had to make my first paragarphy smaller and in bold as this followed my publication plan which was based upon my research into the codes and conventions of DPS.

Next I added a quote onto the page, so that I could break up the large asmount of text, making it seem easier to read for the reader. I put the text in black as this contrast with the title. I made the text bigger than the 11pt article writing as this would allow it to stand out.

Firstly, I used the identical title from my contents as this followed the conventions of a magazine in that the title becomes the logo and therefore associted with my magazine.

Then I added the contents with also complied with the codes and conventions as it was of similar font to the title but did not distract attention from it. In that it was not the focal point of the magazine.

In addition, the focal point of my contents page becomes the photo that conveys codes and conventions of a magazine, as it is individual and 'quirky'.

By adding smaller photographs to the contents page it added further attributes of a conventional music magazine by alluding to the contents of the magazine.

The texts was added last to the text as I had to fit it around the images. The contents was broken down in to three sections following convention - Cover, features and regular. This meant the audience coudl access the information more efficently.

Screen shots of magazine front cover

Whilest I was completing my work in photoshop for my front cover, I took screen shots of my progress and elements that I changed throughout in order to make my magazine compliement the rock genre that I have chosen. In additon, while making my magazine, it was important to follow the codes and conventions of a music magzine from earlier research, and constanly refer to the chosen magazine of study, follow my publication plan and use feedback from questionarie. The latter point, influenced major attributes to the fineshed design such as the colour scheme, price and genral layout. This was important as the questionarie estblished my target audience thus making the feedback valuable to the magazine design.

Used black text to see if it would work alongside the other coverline but this removes attention fromt he title which is black.

Also I have changed the texture of the coverlines to be more bold and embossed upon the page which corresponds with the main coverline thus creating a link between texts. It also makes a bold statement by mixing two of the colours together - black and red so it looks more appealing as it follows the feedback directly.

It was difficult to place the main cover line as it needed to be central to create a symentrical appeal to the magazine. As part of the feedback the layout was a positive aspect to the magzines on the market today, so I decided to mirrior some elements this, by looking at 'classic rock' and 'rolling stone'.

I added the detailing to the magzine, such as bar code, price and the positioning statement as these were important to following the conventions.

Pictures for magazine

Double page spread photographs -

These images were improtant as they went along side my article and anchor the statement of iconic. The models were dressed accroding to the genre and the camera angles were intended to be a bit different. The models are all individual so it sets the photographs off well and the brick wall as the background creates a focal point towards the models.

Front Cover pictures -
This was my first set of contents photos, and I had told the models what to wear so that it was like the rock genre and picked a white background for the location. But the lighting turned out to be unflattering to the models and did not covey the rock genre. Also, the background made it difficlut to put ona magazine, and I did not want to change it to a gradient coloured background as this sometimes looks unproffesional. Therefore, I decided to retake the photos outside for better lighting and agasint a brick wall so that it would be easier to impose upon a magzine.

Contents page photographs -
For theses I needed to capture an older audiecne by using an 'iconic rock star' to anchor a feature artilce I have. This was difficult as the background was hard to choose, I wanted casual, home like so that it looked as if the rock star had left the life of rock. Moreover, I needed a band for another article, this one I found easier to do, as I used people of my age to convey the youth of the band. Also I had the background for a brick wall so that the lighting was good. And it conveys a sense of attitude particular when taken from an angle.

Front Cover picture - redone.

I decided to redo my pictures, after deciding I did not like the background and lighting on the first set of front over images.
