Pictures for magazine

Double page spread photographs -

These images were improtant as they went along side my article and anchor the statement of iconic. The models were dressed accroding to the genre and the camera angles were intended to be a bit different. The models are all individual so it sets the photographs off well and the brick wall as the background creates a focal point towards the models.

Front Cover pictures -
This was my first set of contents photos, and I had told the models what to wear so that it was like the rock genre and picked a white background for the location. But the lighting turned out to be unflattering to the models and did not covey the rock genre. Also, the background made it difficlut to put ona magazine, and I did not want to change it to a gradient coloured background as this sometimes looks unproffesional. Therefore, I decided to retake the photos outside for better lighting and agasint a brick wall so that it would be easier to impose upon a magzine.

Contents page photographs -
For theses I needed to capture an older audiecne by using an 'iconic rock star' to anchor a feature artilce I have. This was difficult as the background was hard to choose, I wanted casual, home like so that it looked as if the rock star had left the life of rock. Moreover, I needed a band for another article, this one I found easier to do, as I used people of my age to convey the youth of the band. Also I had the background for a brick wall so that the lighting was good. And it conveys a sense of attitude particular when taken from an angle.

Front Cover picture - redone.

I decided to redo my pictures, after deciding I did not like the background and lighting on the first set of front over images.

Decisions about magazine

Cover image –
The front cover image will be a band called ‘The Rag Dolls’
The band are a new rock band but look iconic as they are wearing leather jackets, skinny jeans, boots and t-shirts.
They are posed looking down at the camera so look superior to the audience hence conveying the attitude that follows the codes and conventions of the music magazine photos.
The background of the picture will be white or brick
The band members are – two girls and boy.
The main cover line placed on top of them will read – ‘Rock’ large writing that stretches across the whole page and then in smaller writing underneath – ‘it’s got a whole new look and their taking the world by storm’.

Other cover lines will included on my front over:

Double page spread article –
“Up close and Personal with ‘A Shot in the Dark’”
One large image that is predominately on the right page and bleeds onto the other.
The image of the band (3 members) will be as followed –
- will be outside against a brick wall
- They will be leaning against the wall.
- Full length body shot of band
- One will be looking at the camera directly
- One will be looking down on the ground
The models – 3 boys wearing leather jackets, skinny jeans and boots in order to create the image of a rock band.

The article itself-
- It will be an interview with the band put into article form rather than simply a question and answer kind of layout. As the latter layout tends to infer laziness or lack of skill.
- The article will be laid out in 3 columns broken up by 2 large quotes.
- In context to the lay out of the page, there will be a small thin black border across the bottom and top of the page.
- In order to comply with the typical attributes of a music magazine double page spread it is important that I follow the codes and conventions researched in earlier tasks and deviate were I feel necessary that will benefit my magazine.

Publication plan

Publication plan

Title: Legend
Positioning statement: Your timeless rock guide
Frequency of publication: Monthly
Price: £3.95
Distribution: Newsagents, music stores, supermarkets
Rationale: The magazine is adapted to combine both iconic and new rock music in order to appeal to the whole demographic of the rock genre. However, due to my research the front cover will be to attract the younger audiences therefore include an up and coming band. Then the feature articles or regulars will include iconic stars of the rock genre. This way I appeal to all sections of the target audience.
Style: It is an informal approach to the rock and roll genre of magazine but the articles will be of a detailed and informative nature. There will be limited posters as they create an unsophisticated and childish feel and according to market research the public do not want posters. The tone of the articles will follow the informal pattern with use of slang words. Images will be of an interesting style and will be dominant in the articles and the content page as this follows the results of the market research.
